Description
You will develop your competence in working with the person-centred counselling approach, and you will develop a wide range of professional skills, including communication, reflective practice and self-awareness, research skills, mindfulness and cognitive behavioural therapy (CBT).
What Qualification/level is this course?
This course does not lead to a qualification, is for personal development and is at beginner/improver level.
Who is the course for?
This course provides the first step for those who may wish to explore counselling and/or NLP coaching as a long term career path and those who wish to establish how to use counselling and NLP skills in their work and home life.
To access this course, learners should be able to demonstrate the following:
A good standard of English;
Ability to work with a degree of autonomy;
Be able to accept increasing responsibility for their own work;
Co-operation with others;
Open mindedness
Please note that this programme does not provide the student with a professional qualification or entitle the student to practice counselling or NLP coaching professionally.
What can I expect to learn?
This non-accredited programme is a basic introduction to counselling and NLP skills and practice. It covers the following areas:-
The difference between counselling, NLP and other helping activities;
The ethical practice, which underpins counselling and NLP coaching;
An outline to the roots of counselling and the three main areas of theory;
A history of the development of NLP;
How to be a skilled listener;
Skills, attitudes and abilities required to be a counsellor and/or NLP coach;
An introduction to some simple, effective counselling models and NLP techniques;
How to train to become a counsellor and/or NLP coach;
Current legislation of voluntary registration for Counselling Practitioners and market practices for NLP Practitioners.
How will I learn?
Tutor presentations, small and large group discussions, pair work, case studies, workshops, journal self-reflections and personal research.
Please note that role play is an essential part of this course.
How will I know how well I am doing?
Assessment will be on-going throughout the course linked to an individual learning plan. Learners must be prepared to annotate this weekly to reflect on their learning and record progress.
Will I need to do any work at home?
Yes. You will be required to reflect on your own learning and complete an individual learning plan to identify your progress.
You may also be asked to undertake short "homework" activities to endorse learning and confirm understanding.
You may also like to undertake targeted reading of handouts and other materials as directed and do some research.
What will I need to provide?
Notebook and pen. An up to date copy of the BACP (British Association for Counselling and Psychotherapy) Ethical Framework for Good Practice in Counselling and Psychotherapy is really useful available to download for free from their website www.bacp.co.uk .
You may find it advantageous to have an up to date library card to access a wider range of texts for research and to secure internet access if you do not have this at home.
Are there any other costs?
No. Reference will be made to a range of supporting texts which learner may wish to access for independent study however these are not essential to the programme.
What can I do next?
An approved Level 2 Certificate in Counselling Skills (available through a range of awarding bodies and organisations).
An NLP Diploma foundation course leading to an NLP Practitioner course (available through a range of organisations)
