Description

By taking this course you will develop fluent knowledge, develop skills and understanding of mathematical concepts and aquire, select and apply mathematical techniques to solve problems.
  

What Qualification/Level is this course?
Please note that in order to enrol onto a GCSE course it is a requirement that you attend a GCSE Assessment and Induction Session in your chosen subject(s). These take place at every Adult Community Learning centre from June - September and times and dates are available in the brochure and online. GCSE Mathematics (linear) Foundation & Higher Edexcel 1380

Who is this course for?
Students who are aiming to achieve a grade A*-G in GCSE Maths. At Foundation level a maximum of grade C can be achieved. If you require a higher grade than C then you should take the Higher tier. However, the minimum grade at Higher tier is D, below this no grade is awarded.

What can I expect to learn?
This course will closely follow the Edexcel syllabus for GCSE Maths By the end of the course the student should be able to: Foundation tier: Achieve a pass at grades C-G Use and apply mathematics in practical tasks and real life problems Develop and use a range of methods of computation Higher tier: Achieve a pass at grades A*-C Solve problems of increasing complexity involving algebraic and numeric manipulation Solve problems using more complex shapes and solids Use an increasing range of mathematical language and notation Use an extended range of functional keys on a calculator Solve more complex geometric problems Topics covered by GCSE mathematics syllabus include Handling Data, Measures, Shape, Space, Number and Algebra

How will I learn?
Whole class, small group and individual work within the class, supplemented with substantial individual study at home. There is also a VLE (Virtual Learning Environment) which can be accessed via the internet for additional home study.

How will I know how well I am doing?
Regular feedback from the tutor, periodic results of practice questions, feedback from any work handed into the tutor.

Will I need to do extra work at Home?
In order to get the most from the course you should be committed to home study, getting to know the material your tutor will be discussing at the next session and reviewing what you have already learnt. Substantial hours of practice and study per week at home is expected together with home and course work completion as directed by the tutor

What will I need to provide?
Pens and pencils Paper (plain, squared or lined as you prefer) Folder for your notes Graph paper Mathematical drawing instruments (a ruler, compasses, protractor, set square) Scientific calculator Text book (approx. £20)
