You'll begin to understand basic rules of grammar, such as personal pronouns, and definite and indefinite articles. As you progress throughout the year, you'll learn to describe events, using the past tense, and learn about Italian culture and way of life.

Qualification Aim/Level
Non-accredited, Level 3.

Who is this course for?
Circle courses are for those who have studied the language for at least 4 or 5 years or who have GCSE or equivalent and now wish to study the language further. You should be able to cope reasonably confidently in a variety of everyday transactional situations and talk in some detail about yourself and your lifestyle using present, past, future and conditional tenses.

What can I expect to learn?
To help bridge the gap between intermediate and advanced levels, you will revise language structures and practise your communication skills in order to develop greater confidence, fluency and accuracy. You will be exposed to a wider range of vocabulary and will be encouraged to identify themes and ideas from a wider range of reading and listening material. You will practise expressing your feelings and opinions and will start to take part in conversations on a variety of topics relating to current affairs, culture and traditions and class members' own interests and experiences. By the end of the course you should be able to: converse confidently on a range of everyday topics; use everyday grammatical structures with more accuracy and demonstrate a greater awareness of the structure of the language; obtain information from a variety of spoken and written sources; use a wider range of vocabulary; start to participate in discussions on a range of themes and topics, expressing ideas, feelings and opinions; write letters and reports with increased confidence and accuracy; demonstrate a greater understanding of contemporary culture and way of life.

How will I learn?
Your tutor will use a number of different teaching methods to develop your communicative skills. These will include pair and group activities to develop speaking skills; use of videos and DVD/CDs to develop listening skills, and use of wide range of authentic materials to develop reading skills.

How will I know how well I am doing?
Your tutor will monitor your progress throughout the course by observing classroom activities and checking your completed worksheets and any homework that is set.

Will I need to do extra work at Home?
To get the most from the course, we recommend you spend at least 2 hours a week to go over what you have learnt and prepare for the next session. Your tutor will normally set you a task to do at home, which may involve reading, writing or researching information about a specific topic.

What will I need to provide?
You may need to buy a course text book - your tutor will discuss this with you at the first class meeting, so please do not buy anything before then. This will cost approx. £10 - £15. In addition, you will need pen, paper and a ring binder in which to keep course materials.

Are there any other costs?
Your tutor may recommend that you buy a dictionary. You may also wish to buy any DVD/CDs which accompany your course book, but this is optional. However, if you wish to do this, please note that most publishers require you to buy accompanying audio materials as part of a pack with the book.

What can I do next?
Your tutor will advise you at the end of the course whether you would benefit from progressing further in this course or whether the ‘Circle Plus’ course would be more suitable for you. If a further course is not in the programme it can be set up subject to sufficient numbers.
